A Trip to the Emergency Room

Well, there is no way around it. Haley had an accident last Friday night (a week ago now). The whole family was playing in the backyard. Rufus went running for a toy and nudged Haley as he ran past. She fell back like she does many times a day as a one year old. she was screaming so Benjamin picked her up to comfort her. When he went to pass her off to Laura, he noticed her arm was bending where it shouldn't. So to the emergency room we went after calling the landlord for the nearest hospital and frantically packing the diaper bag she unloaded earlier in the day. On the way to the hospital we stopped and Benjamin's good friend Brandon helped give Haley a blessing. The actual visit went fairly smoothly. From the time we left our house to when we got home, only two and a half hours had elapsed. She fractured completely through both her radius and her ulna (Benjamin is the smarty pants on that one) or in normal people terms both bones in her forearm.
They put a "soft cast" on her for a few days. In order to keep everything where it should, she spent all of her time awake in a sling that Laura doctored (they don't come in a size small enough for her). Laura shortened the strap, made a "pillow" for her neck, and rearraigned where everything was so that the velcro would be in an easier place to take on and off.We wanted to make a special note that in the pictures of her before church, she has her hair done! Yes, it is one silly pony tail on the top of her head. But instead let us focus on the fact that she has enough hair to do ANYTHING with! Her hair is very curly but goes frizzy if you rub it very much. So the carseat ruins even the best hairdo. But the ponytail is so funny. She looked so cute and so sad in her ponytail and sling/cast for church. The picture of her in her high chair is of her cast without the sling, as well as what her hair looked like after we took the ponytail out after church. Who needs hairspray?!

On Tuesday, after the long weekend, we got into the doctor who put her new, beautiful cast on her. She chose the sticker after her cast. It is Dora ther Explorer (mostly because it was more colorful) and says "STAR PATIENT" and then something in spanish... She screamed the entire time that the nurse was in the room since she no longer likes anyone who wears scrubs. This new phenomenon started when the X-ray technician in the ER was twisting her arm to get a good picture. Can you blame her? But after her hard cast was put on she was all smiles and walked out of the room, down the hall, stood on the elevator and walked almost all the way to the car herself. Benjamin wanted to spoil her and we went to Burger King to get ice cream after. She will get the cast off in one month as long as everything goes to plan. She is adjusting well, but baths are not fun.

We love her so much. We are so grateful for her. She is a blessing in our lives and this only reminded us further of how much we are grateful that she was born under the covenant and will be our little girl forever!

Aaaah, poor little girl. That sounds so painful. She's a little trooper though!

Oh man, that is too bad! I broke both of the bones in my arm when I was eight-it hurts. She is so cute in her little cast though.

Oh yeah, and Brett broke his arm three times before he was ten! Ha ha! At least kids are very resiliant!

Poor little Haley! At least she is such a trooper and is doing such a great job handling this. I love her ponytail! It's so precious!

So sorry to hear of Hailey's mishap! It is hard to have things like that happen any time, but especially when they are so small. Lucky for her she has such great parents to take care of her. Get well quick!

Oops! Sorry I misspelled Haley's name. It is much cuter the right way. (my excuse is I know one spelled the other way)

So my goal is to go find one of the many pictures of Dallin with his matching blue cast. Then we can put them side by side. Sad thing, babies with casts. At least YOU are not big and pregnant like I was. Everywhere I went people thought I was trailer trash!

Oh, poor little sweetie pie. That must have been really hard for you as parents to see her in pain. I'm sorry to hear that, I'm glad she is doing better and not in as much pain anymore!
